Sieve
in a nutshell
|
| An Internet scripting standard
(RFC 3028) for filtering incoming email at the server level,
Sieve scripts are automated by Bayou Tech so that they can be
shared among an expanding worldwide coalition network of ISPs
and VOP Anti-Spam Coalition (VASC). Together, Sieve scripts
are continuously generated and updated and then tested and redistributed
to all Seive Servers., 24/7. With Sieve, you are never alone
in your battle against spam! |

Other
SPAM Techonoglies VS. Sieve
|

|
Sieve
vs. checksum databases
(Brightmail, Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse)
|
| Description |
| |
Checksum databases compile a list
of checksums - the sum of all the bytes of a message. These
numbers uniquely identify each message tagged as spam by
the network. |
| Weakness |
| |
Spammers increasingly include random
digits in the body of their message. This random number changes
the checksum value of messages, so that each different random
number needs to be blocked. For instance, if a spammer includes
a 6-digit number in their message, then 999,999 different checksum
entries are needed to block this specific spam. If the spammer
adds a unique incremental digit in the body of the message,
then in effect, checksum databases can never block this spam! |
| The
Sieve solution |
| |
When blocking a message,
Sieve scripts look for a unique pattern to block. Thus, they
can easily block a spam message, even if it has a random pattern
in the body of the message meant to defeat checksum databases. |

Sieve
vs. heuristics
(Vipul's Razor, Spam Assassin)
|
| Description |
| |
Heuristic methods are comprised
of automated mechanisms which categorize email as spam or legitimate.
These processes require no human
intervention but look for known spam patterns and classify messages
accordingly. |
| Weakness |
|
|
| |
Since heuristics are automated,
they are much less flexible when trying to adapt to new types
of spam patterns. Heuristics disregard one fundamental rule
in the battle against spam - spammers are intelligent enough
to outthink a machine and adapt to automated defenses. |
| The Sieve
solution |
| |
With the Anti-Spam Coalition and
Bayou Tech, there are email experts and ISP administrators around
the world who identify and block new spam daily
. A spammer has introduced a new undetectable pattern with a
clever computer subroutine? No problem - a simple line of Sieve
code will block it instantly. |

Sieve
vs desktop applications
(McAfee SpamKiller, Cloudmark SpamNet)
|
| Description |
| |
Desktop applications filter spam
email at the email client level and allow the creation of automated
rules which distribute spam in user-specified folders for review
by the end-user. |
| Weakness |
| |
Desktop applications do not get
rid of spam email - they merely manage it. Most damage caused
by spam is incurred in network performance loss, loss of productivity,
and the threat of network resources being hijacked by a spammer.
Desktop applications distribute spam in user folders but they
still must be reviewed by the end user. The damage is already
done! |
